Improving Heavy-Duty Military Vehicle ADAS Safety With Rugged Edge AI Computer
Objective
Military vehicle ADAS requires reliable onboard computing to improve visibility around heavy-duty trucks and large mobile cranes. A military vehicle solution provider needed to process multiple high-resolution camera feeds for real-time 360° surround viewing, blind-spot detection, and reverse assistance while maintaining stable operation in high-temperature environments and under continuous vibration.
Case Overview
- Customer: Defense & Military Customer
- Use Case: ADAS for Heavy-Duty Military Cranes and Trucks
- Product: ABOX-5220(P)(G) AI GPU Computer
Key Takeaways
- 360° Surround Visibility: Gives operators a clearer view around large vehicle bodies.
- GPU-Accelerated Processing: Supports high-resolution image stitching and real-time vision inference.
- Rugged Multi-Camera Integration: Combines optional PoE connectivity with vehicle-ready power management and shock and vibration resistance.
Overcoming Blind Spots Around Large Military Vehicle
Heavy-duty military trucks and cranes have large bodies, elevated cabins, and specialized equipment that can restrict an operator’s view. These blind spots create safety risks during turning, reversing, and equipment positioning, particularly when personnel, vehicles, or obstacles are close to the vehicle.
The customer needed to combine video from cameras installed around the vehicle into a seamless 360° surround view. The system also had to deliver timely visual information for blind-spot detection and reverse assistance without depending on continuous remote connectivity.
This required an onboard computer with sufficient GPU performance for multiple high-resolution video streams. It also needed flexible camera connectivity and stable operation despite heat, shock, continuous vibration, and vehicle power fluctuations.
Rugged Computer for Real-Time Multi-Camera Vision
The customer selected ABOX-5220(P)(G) as the onboard computing platform for its ADAS system. Its 14th Gen Intel® Core™ processor and optional NVIDIA RTX™ Embedded Ada GPU process multiple high-resolution camera feeds and combine them into a real-time 360° surround view. Local processing supports responsive visual information without relying on continuous network connectivity.
Eight GbE ports with optional PoE support simplify the integration of cameras positioned around the vehicle. Compatible IP cameras can receive power and transmit video through the same Ethernet cable, reducing cabling complexity while providing the visual coverage required for blind-spot detection and reverse assistance.
For rugged vehicle deployment, the platform supports 9–60VDC input and smart ignition management. Its MIL-STD-810H-tested resistance to shock and vibration helps maintain stable operation in demanding mobile environments. Wide-temperature configurations are also available, depending on the selected GPU and accessories.
Safer Maneuvering Around Heavy Duty Military Vehicles
The real-time 360° surround view gives operators a more complete view of areas that are difficult to see directly from the cabin. By combining multiple camera feeds, the system supports earlier awareness of nearby personnel, vehicles, equipment, and obstacles. Blind-spot detection and reverse assistance also provide additional visual guidance during turning, reversing, and equipment positioning.
Local edge processing keeps visual information responsive, while the rugged computing platform supports stable ADAS operation under heat, shock, vibration, and vehicle power fluctuations. Together, these capabilities help the customer build a reliable ADAS solution for heavy-duty military trucks and cranes operating in demanding environments.
